For nearly 15 years, Gilead Sciences pushed sales of HIV prevention drug Truvada while knowing of its dangerous side effects on kidneys and bones.

Side effects of Gilead's TDF drugs include:

• Acute kidney injury
• Chronic kidney disease
• Kidney failure
• Softened bones, leading to fractures
• Osteoporosis
• Osteopenia
• Other kidney and bone-related issues

These communities deserve better methods of HIV prevention and treatment. Gilead Sciences downplayed the risks of Truvada while marketing the drug, leading to devastating bone and kidney damage for unsuspecting Truvada users.

TDF drugs have also been shown to reduce bone density by 2 to 6%.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic ravaged the United States in the 80s and 90s. Even today, gay and bisexual men, transgender women, and black and Latino communities remain disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDs.

Hold Gilead Responsible

At present, Gilead Sciences controls the U.S market for HIV treatment drugs. More than 80% of patients take one of Gilead’s products daily. With $80 billion in sales, Gilead has a lot of incentive to maintain this stranglehold on the market. The company has faced multiple allegations of monopoly and of keeping safer alternatives to Truvada off the market.

Recently, its shareholders sued Gilead for its records in an effort to look into monopolization and control over patents pertaining to HIV medications. Lawsuits allege that Gilead Sciences clamped down on generic competition through agreements with rivals. They also allege that it unfairly made profits off government patents and withheld safety information.

It is shocking that Gilead Sciences has placed people over profits in this way. It has pushed a drug that is known to have dangerous side effects, and may have purposely postponed releasing a safer alternative.

Profiting off patients’ health is inexcusable. Gilead must be held responsible for putting consumers at risk under the guise of preventing HIV.
